Where Is Your Father
When we are alone together in the dark
With your softness curled against my heartbeat
As the wind scolds the walls around us
And I listen to your steady breath

Where is your father
When a careless tumble brings blood
with tears, and you look around for help
As youth replaces infancy and words emerge
from babble against my shoulder

Where is your father
I want to take his hand and nail it
To the ground before you, to let him see
As you spin and stagger with a crooked smile
The laughter bubbling from between tiny new teeth

Where is your father
Who planted a seed then walked away
Before it could sprout a leaf and stalk
And now to flower unseen and forgotten
With such a glorious bloom and petals of silk

Where is your father
Who chooses to be blind
To this cherub face, these cautious steps
Who wishes to ignore your reaching hands
Who cannot find a love for your love

Where is your father?
